On 3 July 2018, PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk (CAP) with Ministry of Public Work and Public Housing (PUPR) inaugurate the implementation of asphalt plastic road within 6.372 m2 CAP’s Plant areal sited in Cilegon, Banten. This asphalt plastic program is part of CAP’s sustainability program and a form of support to government’s target to reduce plastic waste to 70% by 2025.
The Asphalt Plastic is made of common asphalt material but with a mix of cut-up plastic waste, type of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) that takes form of plastic bag. In order to cover the needs of cut-up plastic waste, CAP also work hand-in-hand with Indonesian Olefin, Aromatic and Plastic Industry Association (INAPLAS) and Indonesian Plastic Recycle Association (ADUPI).
Research conducted by Ministry of PUPR towards asphalt plastic trial in several cities, indicated that the addition of plastic component towards the asphalt mix could increase asphalt deformation resistance level, thus it is less prone to crack or more durable. Hence, the implementation of asphalt plastic is expected to be one of effective solutions toward plastic waste problem.

On 28 May 2018, PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk, through its subsidiary, PT Petrokimia Butadiene Indonesia, has awarded Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) and Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT, TOYO’s Indonesian subsidiary) as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors for the 127,000 tons/year Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) and 43,000 tons/year Butene-1 plants. Using the CDMtbe, BASF Selective Hydrogenation and Butene-1 Separation Technology from CB&I, the plants are going to be built in the existing petrochemical complex in Cilegon, Banten and become the first MTBE and Butene-1 plants in Indonesia. The plants with total investment of USD 114 million are expected to start commercial production in the third quarter of 2020.
The new plants will consume Raffinate-1, the by-product from the existing Butadiene unit as its raw material, thus making CAP the most integrated petrochemical complex in Indonesia.
Well aware of the importance of sustainability in running its business operations, PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk will install a safe, smokeless flare technology, Enclosed Ground Flare (EGF). Therefore, on 28 May 2018, CAP officially awarded Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) and Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT), TOYO’s Indonesian subsidiary, as the engineering, procurement and construction contractors for the installation of a new EGF at its petrochemical complex in Cilegon, Banten. This technology significantly reduces any air pollution, noise, heat and light emission during a plant start-up and irregular operational activities. Application of EGF will ensure that there is minimum operational impact to the environment and surrounding communities compared to conventional flare use.
